If you’re planning a destination wedding or elopement, congratulations! No doubt the location is amazing and your wedding will be simply stunning. But what about the vendors you need to hire? It can be tricky trying to find a florist, caterer, etc. when you aren’t local to your venue. Well, I’m here to help! While I can’t help you chose every amazing vendor, I can give you some tips on hiring a photographer who will do your beautiful wedding justice. Here are some reasons I think hiring an out-of-area photographer is a great idea!
Out-of-area photographers have a fresh vision.
You may be thinking, “if we hire a photographer who is unfamiliar with the venue, how will they know where the best spots are for photos?” The truth is that they won’t know right off the bat, but that’s a good thing. As photographers, if we are often at the same venue over and over it becomes very easy to slip into a routine and photograph each wedding very similarly. We think, “oh, last time I got a great shot over by this tree. I’ll do that again” and pretty soon we’re in a bit of a rut. A photographer who has never been to a location before comes in with fresh eyes and an eagerness to find new and unique spots to use. They probably haven’t heard that the pond in the back is the typical place for wedding party photos, so they’ll find something new and fresh.
Non-Local photographers can often be less expensive.
It’s common for the wedding market in popular destination spots to be very high. If you bring a photographer from a different area, it’s quite possible that their pricing (including travel) is less than hiring a local. Just imagine what an Orange County photographer would charge in comparison to a wedding photographer in rural Indiana. They may have the same style, qualifications, and equipment and yet be priced vastly differently because of their markets.
Traveling photographers shoot with excitement and wonder.
Photographers who love to travel are dying to photograph your wedding. I mean dying. We have this insatiable desire to explore and document love in new places. It thrills us and rejuvenates our creativity. We get so incredibly excited when we are able to travel and it feeds our creativity like nothing else. So if you want a truly inspired and passionate photographer for your wedding, pick us.
You have a better chance of finding your photographer soulmate.
I have always said that finding a photographer you absolutely love is so important. You will likely spend more time on your wedding day with your photographer than you will your new spouse! So for this reason you need to hire a photographer who gets you, who you connect well with, and have fun around. And as for their photos, find someone who you really love their style. Not just that they are talented. Hire someone who makes you incredibly excited to have them shoot your wedding. Whose photos make you happy or emotional just by looking at them (even if the subject isn’t you!). Find a photographer you just can’t live without. And if you’re looking outside the destination market, your pool just got a lot bigger.
So take a chance, and widen your search for the perfect photographer. You can find amazing traveling wedding photographers by searching Instagram and Google. And hey, I’m always up for a new adventure! Send me an email, and let’s get planning!
